Unforgettable sights, exotic foods, beautiful beaches, and exciting new experiences are just a few of the reasons we travel. No matter where you go, around the world or around the block, travel can inspire you. Why not take that inspiration and use it to fill your home with things that remind you of your favorite places? Here are a few ways that you can recreate your locations in your own home.
Shop While Traveling
I don’t mean go and pick up a bunch of “I ♥ Paris” refrigerator magnets from the souvenir shop! If you’re visiting a city, chances are there is a regional market place. This is a great place to pick up authentic paintings, sculptures, or accessories that you can bring back to display in your home. Not only is the market place full of great stuff to buy, but it’s there that you can see the true colors of a city. You know you’ve found a good spot if you see locals shopping there as well.
When You’re Already Home
If you’re already home and were too busy having fun to pick up home furnishings (don’t worry it happens), you can still recreate the feelings of your favorite destination! When you head out to shop at home keep these things in mind.
Texture. Many places around the world that have fabric, texture, and patterns that are carried through the landscape. You may not notice it when you’re there, but once you see it again it will strike a familiar chord with you. Pick up any fabrics that remind you of your travels. For instance, thick cottony fabric with bold stripes may remind you of your trip to Guatemala, because it brings to mind the colorful ponchos you saw there.
Color. Color can often be the greatest inspiration when redecorating. Why not bring the colors of your travels into your home? From the deep reds and gold of China, to the turquoise and white colors of the Greek Islands, color is an easy way to blend your travels into your everyday surroundings.
Architecture. One of the most distinctive characteristics of a foreign country is the architecture. This can be tough to recreate in your home unless you’re going to remodel. However, you can always find furniture reminiscent of different architectural styles. It would be difficult to remodel your home to look like Notre Dame, but it’s easy to find gothic-inspired tables, chairs and bedroom sets.
