Taking a vacation while you’re a student can be very rewarding. Major school holidays, such as Christmas break or summer vacation allow you to plan your trip with clear deadlines. There are great opportunities for students to travel the world, follow these tips and your trip is sure to run smoothly!

1) Decide where you want to go! There are many great options available. Do you want to take a traditional vacation? Perhaps and amusement park or basking in the sun of the Virgin Islands? Or would you like to take a more humanitarian approach to your vacation? For example, there are many programs where students can volunteer and share their language and culture with families in exchange for room and board. Other volunteer opportunities include programs wherein you can use and boost your education. For example, offering medical care in an area of poverty.

2) Plane Tickets: If you’re a student you have great opportunities when planning trips. I have found that purchasing plane tickets and booking hotels or hostels yourself is the key to saving money. Travel Agencies are great if you need to make payments, but chances are that you will pay more out of pocket and therefore hath ve less money while you’re actually on vacation. There are some great websites out there that will search various airlines and provide you with multiple flights and prices to choose from. However, I have found that the best prices are found when you go directly to the airline themselves. Often airlines will provide discounts for things such as military, students, or purchases made at least 6 months in advance. Be sure to search nearby airports as well; often it’s worth the additional drive time if you can save a few hundred dollars.

3) Save Money: You can save more money on your flights by only taking carry ons. Most airlines provide 2 free pieces of carry on luggage in addition to your purse or laptop case. If you’re doing something along the lines of back packing across Europe, only taking carry ons is ideal in order to lessen your load while you travel.

4) Where to Stay: Research the area where you’ll be traveling. Search engines can provide tons of information about the safest areas to stay. Using social networking sites can also be a great way to meet people who may have further insight about the place you’ll be vacationing. Use social networking sites to locate locals or people who have visited the area. Vacationers can give you pros and cons, while locals can give you a unique perspective of things to do and see that you can’t find in any tour book.

5) How to Travel on Vacation: Research the best ways to travel while on vacation. Students usually receive great rates in vacation or university areas. If you travel to Europe for example, you can save up to $100 EU on the Euro Rail just for being a student. If you’re traveling within the U.S. and you want to visit multiple destinations, consider the bus or train. Both of these options offer great rates for students.

In conclusion, if you’re a student, there are great options and opportunities available to you. So start your research and take advantage of them!
