Exmoor on a Rainy Day
: More and more people are choosing to holiday in the UK due to limited budgets. And why shouldn’t they? There are so many wonderful destinations to choose from. Exmoor is a fantastic place to head for, and the choice of Exmoor cottage holidays is huge – try UKholidayplaces.co.uk for extensive choices.
Unlike holidaying abroad, the stunning area cannot guarantee year-round fine weather. So what do you do on a rainy day on Exmoor? Read on for some ideas.
Arlington Court
When the beach isn’t an option, the temptation can be to curl up in your cottage and avoid going out. But Exmoor isn’t just about outdoor activities. You can pay a visit to Arlington Court, a complete family estate near Barnstaple. The house contains model ships for the boys to admire and a beautiful shell collection for the girls to appreciate. You can spend hours in the house exploring the rooms and if you run out of things to see there, head out to The Carriage Museum in the stables. There is a host of wonderful vehicles for your exploration.
Should the sun suddenly poke its head out, there are gorgeous gardens to explore too. Or go armed with an umbrella and head out anyway – it’s only rain!
Butlins
If the kids are driving you crazy, break them out of the house and take them Butlins for the day. The weather cannot spoil the fun as there is so much to choose from. With countless attractions, rides and shops, you’ll easily while away several hours and exhaust the kids in the meantime. The indoor swimming pool alone is worth the journey.
Dunster Castle
If you still have a few hours to spare at the end of the Butlins adventure, you could head to nearby Dunster Castle. Situated on top of a wooded hill, this castle contains an incredible fine oak staircase and detailed ceiling plasterwork. Again, if the sun sneaks out, you can head out to enjoy the breath taking views across Exmoor and the Bristol Channel.
Tropiquaria
The kids will be thanking you for weeks to come for introducing them to the magic of Tropiquaria. Based in a grade II listed building near Taunton, the attraction features an African-themed tropical hall and an aquarium. There are regular animal displays to thrill the kids and an indoor play area for them to enjoy between activities. Children under 3 years old are free, those aged 3-16 years cost £7.50 and adults £9. Check the website for details about opening times.
West Somerset Railway
Tog up and take your family out on the tracks for the day! The West Somerset Railway chugs through 20 miles of stunning Somerset coast and countryside and stops at 10 different stations along the way so you have a wide choice of where to hop on and off. The trains are steam-powered kicking out a picturesque plume behind them wherever they go.
Rain? What rain?
As we said, it’s only rain! So if you feel like getting out and about anyway, consider visiting Lundy Island. Situated off the coast of north Devon, there is nothing in between this granite outcrop and America to the west. A peaceful and unspoilt attraction, the island is reachable by the island’s own ship which departs from Bideford and Ilfracombe. Have a look online for up-to-date transport times and costs.
