Canoeing Down the Orange River

: The Orange River is the longest river in South Africa, and it runs across the entire country all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. One of the branches of this mighty river forms the natural physical border between South Africa and neighbouring Namibia. This region is hot, stark, and strikingly beautiful – a surreal desert landscape of rolling dunes, massive geological formations, and eerie silence. It feels like you are taking a trip back in time and you are the only people left in a new world that you have to conquer. It is tough, overwhelming, and absolutely irresistible to anybody with an adventurous spirit. And of course, the best way to explore this incredible part of the world, most of which is inaccessible by car, is by canoe.

There are various routes and options available to potential explorers who choose to take on the mighty river by canoe or inflatable boat. Most of the shorter packages last 3 to 5 days, and focus on guiding larger, inflatable boats through the rapids of the river. This is an ideal getaway, and some of the more fierce rapids are going to get your adrenalin coursing through your veins, but if you really want to make the most of this experience, I highly recommend that you take a canoe. The canoe’s hold two people as well as the large tubs that will contain all of your gear, food and clothing.  Pick your teams well – one person is the engine and it is the responsibility of the other partner to steer.  The first day is generally quite relaxed as you come to grips with your new craft. The canoes are surprisingly comfortable and easy to handle – you do not have to worry about sinking after striking the odd rock. The best thing about these water tours is that you can set up camp for the night wherever you want. Your expert guide will find a suitable place, and you literally just sleep on the floor. Because of the heat you do not need a tent, and rain is never a concern.

Most of the biggest tour operators include meals, so you will wake up to a hearty breakfast each morning before setting out again. And so you continue down the river. Parts of the Orange are very relaxed, and you can enjoy an ice cold beer as you glide down the river. If you are feeling warm, you can simply hop into the water and swim along (just check with the guide that you are safe). Expect to stop and jump off larger rocks along the way too! Of course, the tranquillity of these moments is offset by the intensity of navigating the rapids. Words cannot describe the rush as you guide your canoe through some formidable rapids. If it is safe, you can even strap your life jacket around your waist and go through the rapids on your back – a nappy run.

Truly, an amazing holiday experience!
