America’s 5 Great Road Trips

: There are few places better suited for long road trips than the United States of America, which is traversed by an extensive network of efficient interstates and more scenic highways that wind through mountains, prairies, coastal towns, and old “Wild West” legends. With a country so vast and diverse, however, it can be hard to decide just where a road trip should go. For those who remain undecided, consider these five great road trips through America’s greatest sights and scenes.

1. The Four Corners

The American southwest is one of the most beautiful regions of the country; known as the “Four Corners,” this region is made up of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah. A road trip through this region is nothing if not scenic: highlights include Grand Canyon National Park, Mesa Verde National Park, and the Navajo Nation native American reservation. For history buffs and nature enthusiasts alike, this is an area packed with attractions.

2. Route 66

Just sixty years ago, Route 66 was the primary “road trip” destination in all of the United States. Spanning the country from Chicago, Illinois, in the Midwest, to Los Angeles, California, on the west coast, this highway is full of engaging sights. Chicago is one of the country’s largest and most cosmopolitan cities, and Route 66 heads from this thriving metropolis straight down to St. Louis, Missouri. Home the Gateway Arch and often called the “Gateway to the West,” this city is a must-stop for anyone interested in history. Finally, right before Route 66 finishes its westward trek, drivers will bypass the very first McDonalds restaurant. And from there, well, the rest is history.

3. Route 1

Checking in at just under 2,400 miles long, US Route 1 spans the eastern coast of the United States from Maine to Florida and roughly parallels the I-95 corridor for the majority of its trek. But, because this is a US highway rather than an Interstate highway, it winds through all of the scenic villages and coastal communities that truly make the north eastern United States unique.

Drivers will be treated to all of the major north-eastern cities — from Boston down to Washington, DC — before they’re taken through the scenic Carolina piedmont region and then directed south to Florida’s beaches, eventually ending up in Key West. For lovers of cities, great nightlife, and excellent beaches, this is a road trip worth taking.

4. Overseas Highway, Florida

Technically part of US Route 1, this scenic highway merits a road trip of its own. The 105-mile highway composed of bridges, causeway, and man-made islands, links Florida with all of its islands in the Florida Keys. And it’s a 105-mile drive that won’t soon be forgotten, as drivers will find themselves surrounded by shimmering ocean waters and lush tropical foliage for the duration of their drive.

5. San Francisco’s Scenic Drive

At just 50 miles, it’s not a very long road trip — but it’s certainly one of the most scenic vistas in the United States. San Francisco has a special network of road signs that indicate a “scenic drive” both within and around the city limits. Its unique composition of hills, bays, oceans, and unique architecture make this 50-mile trip one for the ages – and for the cameras.

Conclusions

America has what might be the perfect blend of natural beauty and stunning architectural and cultural attractions. Its engineering feats are worth a road trip in and of themselves, and the country’s cities are best seen by car and by camera. These scenic routes through this diverse landscape are sure to entertain even the most discerning and critical road trip driver.
